Secrets behind the screen
interactive installation

client

science museum, London

the brief

To create an interactive installation which explains what software code is and how it works.

the project

Rom and son created an original animated and talkative'virtual pet' whose journey of self discovery sheds light on the 'secrets behind the screen' - the software code which runs computers, PDAs, and video games consoles. The interactive installation demonstrates how software code creates virtual machines out of a limited number of simple logical operations, and how the combination of these simple units gives rise to complex and sometimes lifelike behaviour. Users interact via touch screen with variable counters, if statements and other basic units of software programming. Secrets behind the screens opened in September 2000 as part of the Wellcome Wing Extension at the Science Museum.
